UNICEF Hiring: National Consultants for Loss and Damage in Nairobi

UNICEF is inviting applications from qualified professionals to join its Roster of National Consultants for Loss and Damage within the Global Programme Division. Based in Nairobi, this full-time consultancy opportunity is ideal for individuals with strong experience in climate-related programming, data systems, and policy support at national level.

The consultants will play a key role in supporting country-led approaches to loss and damage, ensuring alignment with global intergovernmental processes while remaining grounded in national priorities. A major focus of the role is strengthening national reporting and monitoring systems by integrating age-disaggregated data and child-sensitive indicators into policy and planning frameworks.

Successful candidates will support the uptake and application of the Global Children Hazard Database, working closely with governments to embed these data tools into national loss and damage strategies. In addition, consultants will contribute to capacity building through training sessions and knowledge-sharing activities for UNICEF staff and partners at headquarters, country offices, and centres of excellence.

Because loss and damage interventions are highly context-specific, this role emphasizes local expertise. National consultants are expected to leverage their understanding of national systems, languages, and institutional environments to support a bottom-up, country-owned process for developing FRLD (Funding for Responses to Loss and Damage) proposals.

This opportunity suits professionals who are passionate about climate resilience, child-sensitive policy development, and evidence-based programming.

Key Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (advanced qualifications are an asset)

  • Experience in climate change, disaster risk, data systems, or development policy

  • Strong understanding of national monitoring and reporting frameworks

  • Ability to work with age-disaggregated data and child-focused indicators

  • Excellent communication and capacity-building skills
