Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) — a global nonprofit dedicated to using science and medicine to document human rights violations — is seeking a Senior Accountant to join its Kenya office in Nairobi.

This full-time position offers an opportunity to play a vital role in managing international financial operations, supporting compliance, and ensuring transparency within one of the world’s most respected human rights organizations.

About the Role

The Senior Accountant will oversee key accounting functions, including audits, financial reporting, and compliance with U.S. GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards. The position requires close collaboration with the U.S. Controller and will bridge financial operations between the U.S. and Kenya offices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage payroll, benefits, investments, and credit card reconciliations.

  • Handle Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable processes, including invoices and payments.

  • Process payments through Bill.com, including checks, ACH, and wire transfers.

  • Prepare and reconcile monthly bank accounts and financial schedules.

  • Oversee annual audits for the Kenya office and assist in the U.S. audit process.

  • Ensure compliance with IRS Form 1099 and other U.S. reporting requirements.

  • Update the Chart of Accounts and assist with Form 990 filings.

  • Conduct staff training on accounting systems and policies.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.

  • Minimum of 5 years of professional accounting experience.

  • Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP and nonprofit accounting practices.

  • Proficiency in Sage Intacct, Bill.com, and Spend and Expense systems.

  • Experience managing audits in both U.S. and Kenyan nonprofit environments.

  • Excellent communication, attention to detail, and analytical skills.

Compensation and Work Conditions

This position offers a hybrid work model based in Nairobi, with work hours aligned to U.S. Eastern Standard Time. The salary range is $20,000 – $22,000 USD, commensurate with experience, and includes comprehensive employer-paid benefits such as medical, dental, disability, and life insurance.
