Co-operative Bank of Kenya is seeking a Sacco Legal Officer in Nairobi to provide expert legal advisory services, manage contracts, oversee litigation, and ensure the Sacco operates within all legal frameworks.
Role Overview:
The Sacco Legal Officer plays a pivotal role in protecting the Sacco from legal and compliance risks while supporting management, the Board, and departments with timely legal guidance. This includes ensuring adherence to the Co-operative Societies Act, SASRA regulations, data protection laws, labour laws, and other relevant legislation.
Key Responsibilities:
Legal Advisory & Compliance:

Provide legal advice to Management, Board, and departments on matters affecting the Sacco.

Ensure compliance with SASRA regulations, Co-operative Societies Act, Data Protection Act, Employment Act, and other relevant laws.

Review, develop, and update policies, procedures, bylaws, and governance documents.

Respond to regulatory inspections, audits, and compliance reviews.
HR & Administrative Legal Support:

Advise on staff contracts, disciplinary cases, terminations, and labour disputes.

Ensure HR practices comply with labour laws and internal policies.
Litigation & Dispute Management:

Manage all litigation matters and liaise with external advocates.

Support debt recovery through legal mechanisms, including court actions and CRB listings.
Governance & Contract Management:

Provide legal guidance to the Board and Management on governance and compliance issues.

Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, MOUs, leases, and partnership agreements.

Maintain a secure contracts registry and ensure proper custody of legal and corporate documents.
Member & Customer Issues:

Handle customer complaints requiring legal interpretation.

Support alternative dispute resolution between members and the Sacco.
Qualifications & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Law (LLB) from an accredited law school.

At least 2 years post-admission experience.

Valid practicing certificate and membership in the Law Society of Kenya in good standing.

Knowledge of the Sacco business model and operational issues.

Strong analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills with attention to detail.
