The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is offering an exciting opportunity for young professionals and students interested in international security, maritime crime prevention, and global governance. The Drug Control and Crime Prevention Internship is based in Nairobi under the Global Maritime Crime Programme’s Gulf of Aden and Red Sea (GARS) team.
The GARS team supports countries across the East African region—including Kenya, Somalia, Uganda, Ethiopia, and Djibouti—in tackling maritime crime and strengthening the rule of law. The internship runs for six months, is full-time (40 hours per week), and is conducted in-person.
Although the internship is unpaid, it provides valuable experience working in a multicultural UN environment.
Key Responsibilities of the Intern
During the internship, the selected candidate will work under the supervision of the programme’s professional staff. Responsibilities may include:
1. Research & Documentation

Preparing background papers, speeches, talking points, summaries, and presentations.

Assisting in drafting program-related documents and materials.
2. Event Coordination

Helping to organize technical workshops, high-level meetings, and conferences.

Supporting logistical and administrative preparations.
3. Participation in Meetings

Attending and taking detailed notes during meetings or consultations.
4. Translation Support

Translating documents between Somali and English (if applicable).
5. General Programme Support

Handling other tasks as needed to support programme operations.
Who Can Apply?
To qualify for this internship, applicants must meet one of the following academic conditions:

Be enrolled in a graduate program (Master’s or equivalent)
