GEF Project Specialist I at UNEP – A Key Role in Climate Action

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is seeking a GEF Project Specialist I in Nairobi, Kenya. This position is at the heart of environmental sustainability, supporting the design, implementation, and monitoring of projects under the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

As part of UNEP’s climate-focused team, the specialist will ensure projects are well-coordinated, technically sound, and financially compliant. From developing agreements to tracking project budgets, this role combines administration, research, and project management to ensure smooth execution.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support programme and project development, including reviewing proposals and agreements.

  • Monitor project budgets, work plans, and progress reports to ensure compliance.

  • Guide executing agencies (EAs) on budget revisions and sustainability strategies.

  • Organize portfolio meetings and ensure proper filing and knowledge-sharing.

  • Assist in compiling data for climate reports, including National Communications (NCs) and Biennial Transparency Reports (BTRs).

Qualifications You’ll Need:
Applicants must have an advanced degree in natural sciences, environmental management, or international relations (a bachelor’s degree plus two years’ experience may also qualify). A minimum of two years in programme/project administration is required, preferably with exposure to climate funds like the GEF and frameworks like the UNFCCC.
